Re: 1980 Sedan
I have always found it easier to do engine and trans any time an engine needs to come out. I'd drop a trans to do whatever though.
I use "Purple Power" to clean. The only problem is it can remove paint. It is expensive, but a little goes a LOOOOONG way. I guess it's about the same thing either way - a lot of the cheap stuff, or a little of the expensive stuff. Maybe pre-soak with the expensive stuff and wash away with the cheap stuff? I need to give that a try.
Congrats on the easy-out! I try my damnedest not to use one.

Re: 1980 Sedan
Still parts gathering....
Got a inline fuel pump from an early 80's BMW looks to be in good shape
$30 Battery from 2011
Throttle cable from an early 90's sentra, will find out if its the right size today
I am totally stuck on where/how to drill for the new EFI gas pedal. My buddy is gonna help but it might be a while.
I crushed one of the heater core inlet/outlet brass lines I hope I can just put something in the line to bend it back out without damaging it further
I will get some pics because this is pointless without them!

Re: 1980 Sedan
Shopping list
-Customer air filter (I have a bunch of pipes to try to rig an intake with the MAF)
-Battery tie down of some kind
-Fluids
-EFI fuel lines (buddy has a mini bender I can borrow)
-Some custom something or other to affix a slim e-fan I have to the Corona radiator

Re: 1980 Sedan
Here's a few pics. I know it doesn't look like much has changed. Saturday night is the big night. Buddies are coming to help me work on it. plans are
replace throw out bearing and reinstall trans
customize a mount for the Celica EFI pedal and throttle cable (Grabbed an early 90's sentra throttle cable dunno if its gonna work )
mount battery in the trunk
mount an electric fan I got from an early 90's Corolla, it was mounted in front of the radiator gonna try to keep it that way
mount electric inline fuel pump from a 80's BMW (don't even remember the model) on the frame rail. figure out fuel lines.
parts party
Does any other model Corona 79-81 come with a factory tach?
good thing it's warming up outside. I hope Celica HVAC stuff fits
Junkyard results from last Sunday
I'd prefer to move the battery to the back than snake the intake across to the driver side
Can't tell but I need an aftermarket air filter
Let me know what you guys think!

Re: 1980 Sedan
Looks like you're well on your way!
I have an aftermarket air filter when I get that far, also have the Supra AFM, and am hopefully acquiring a Supra TB shortly as well. I want to relocate my battery too, but with a wagon, I'm kinda outta luck.
BTW, the fans are more efficient as a puller, not a pusher.

Re: 1980 Sedan
Been ridiculously busy, car isn't done yet.
Need/looking for:
22RE knock sensor and ignitor (1991)
Good dry cell Battery
New key and ignition mine seems kind of wonky
Finish wiring and mounting electric fuel pump in trunk
Free time
In the mail-
All new brakes and clutch slave and master
Camber plates
In the future-
Heater core is broken, replace broken HVAC parts
Find passenger celica-supra seat
Try to stop trunk leaks
Poly bushings
If it works by Sunday I'd like to go to the Old School Reunion but that is unlikely

Re: 1980 Sedan
Are you sticking with factory brakes? The trick setup is to swap to 3rd gen Celica struts and modify your steering arms to work with them. Then you have vented rotors, and from there can upgrade to '87-'88 Cressida rotors, calipers and brackets for even bigger rotors.

This is what I will go for eventually. I didn't want to try anything custom right off the bat. Does it fit under 14's?
Swap didn't come with coil+ignitor so we are trying to make a 92-93 V6 Camry one work...
My friend made an awesome custom gas pedal. It still uses the floor mounted push pedal but he welded the top half from another pedal so it works with a cable now.
Will get pics when it's running...

Re: 1980 Sedan
Car drove. After a few hours sucked a valve. I did not open the used 22RE i bought. Friend is going to give me a head and block that needs a HG and resurface. Was a blast for a few hours!
Free sample of my RT40... leaning towards finding a body damaged pickup to swap everything over to get it running....

Re: 1980 Sedan
Update!
Got another 22R block yesterday. Looks decent internally, new rings, valve stem seals.
I have some new parts for it as well. Going to install everything while its out.
I just got EGR block off plates from LC Engineering, dunno if i am gonna try to eliminate EGR now or get it running all stock first.
Little bit confused on the lower coolant hose. My hold hose wrappe back behind the alternator then to the radiator. It has a metal center/hard line section. I accidently bent this, can I go another route with the soft line?

Re: 1980 Sedan
Hey gentlemen, been doing lots of work will have pics soon.
Current predicament:
What header would be best?
-85-95 EFI
-No EGR
Will a truck header fit? Are there headers with no EGR ports?

Re: 1980 Sedan
Get the OBX header for a Celica. It has the A.I.R. pump holes and the EGR, but you can have them welded up for cheap before you put it on. It is a stainless steel header, so looks great forever.
On a 2xR, the EGR feeds through the holes below the #2 and 3 exhaust ports, so a machinist can weld those holes and surface that side of the head so that you never have to worry about a block off plate for the intake side of the head either.

What year 22RE? Early or late? The late motors ('85 and later) make more power.

Re: 1980 Sedan
Late model, 85-95 was in a buddys 4runner. It was getting coolant in the oil.
Looks to be from the timing chain cover. Someone tried to weld inside where the chain ate through and failed.
Super excited to get this show on the road!

engnbldr.com has the chain set w/ steel backed drivers side guide for CHEAP! Also sells the chain and cover as a set.

Re: 1980 Sedan
engnbldr pistons are WAY out of balance, so if you need pistons, I'd go to 22re.com. I got my bearings and gaskets from partsdinosaur.com. engnbldr head gaskets are notorious for seeping oil after a very short period of time.

Re: 1980 Sedan
Getting really close to driving.
Now that is it freezing outside my attention is quicly turning to the heating....
I did repalce the destroyed heater core, that and the heater seem to be in good shape...BUT
The "tube" that goes from the heater to the fan (behind glove box) is completely missing and the fan has big pieces kicked out of it.
So it might blow hot air but just in the general area of wherever it feels like
I tried an ae86 "tube" vent to try to connect the heater and fan but it was too small.
Does anyone know if maybe Celica or Cressida parts might fit? Or what site to use for parts cross referencing?
Thanks!
