77 corona brake lights don't work

Post by b-real on Thu Mar 28, 2013 12:32 am

Ok guys. Just picked up a 1977 corona and got the engine running yesterday. The next thig I need to get it up to date is, my brake lights don't work. Like the whole assembly. Including turn signals. My whole dash gauge doesn't light up either. Is there a certain like box or fuse this is all controlled by? All my fuses are good.

Check the fuses.

I'll double check them again, but they looked fine I believe. Is the only place for fuses on this car under the dash, by the driver side left leg?

I know '81s have another box under the hood. Don't just look at them - check them with an ohm or volt meter, or test light, as sometimes they look okay, but aren't.

ok so the first two, are the same connectors. But I don't see anything they should even hook up to. The last one is by the gas tank and guessing that's why my gas gauge isn't working? I'm also wondering if those two connectors are for the brakes and dash...

I'll go and ohm the fuses now though.

-edit-

Replaced all fuses and still nothing. talked to the previous owner and he told me, last time it happened it was a grounding in the trunk. only found one grounding point, wire brushed it, and still nothing...

Check all of the light bulbs and sockets for corrosion. There are grounds on the light housings too.
As for the plugs, you need to get a manual for the wiring diagram. A Celica wiring diagram works as well.

Sorry also forgot to mention, for the turn signals, every time I switch it to right or left. The CHG light goes on. Does that mean charge? And will be looking into it after work today! Thanks so much man.

Ya it means charge. I'm thinking you got some shorting going on possibly in the steering colum. You need a wiring diagram though

Ok so good news! Took the fuse box down and wiggled it around...I now have hazards, horn, and brake lights! But my turn signals don't work. Weird thing is, if I pull my hazard up sometimes, only the left one works. And when it does that, my right turn signal will work though. The hazards do both go on though most times now. But still no turn signals. My brother says it might be the hazard button itself? How would I do this?

BIG UPDATE! Jiggled the fuse box around even more, and I got EVERYTHING to come on! not sure if it's a break in the wire, or the fuse box connections just need a good cleaning, but the fuse box area is the source of all my problems!
