You shouldn't need a tach to tell you when to shift...

Just tired it this morning. It worked! Now gotta fin a way to route the wire in the cabin. Waiting for my Haynes manual to figure out how to remove my clock since it doesn't work. Going to put the tac there.

any idea where I can put the wire through? might just run it though the fender, and i don't think it'll get pinched?

There should be grommets in the firewall with wires running through them already. I've poked a small hole with a scribe, punch, test light... and then pushed the wire through it.

next question...how would one remove the gauge cluster? I took out all the visible screws, but it still feels like it's in there...

scratch that. was able to get the 3 nuts holding the clock in. got it out, the tach is a perfect snug fit in there. and she's working good! just gotta find the headlight switch for the light and it's done!

Did you happen to snap any pics along the way, by chance? I need to take my clock out too, but I actually want to clean it up as it looses an hour or so every few days but dont want to start taking things apart yet. I have a 72 but it looks similar to yours. Nice job. Looks good (minus the white ass paper, lol).

didn't get any pics. but it was straight forward. take out all the screws holding the front part in, then there's going to be another plate where the clear covers connect too. take the bottom portion below the dash out, and reach! I couldn't get the cluster to come out because I believe it's held in by wire connectors. But I was able to reach my arm up and to the back. there's 3 nuts back there. 5mm, and mine was only a little tight. just used a socket and a small extension and turned it by hand, and the clock pops right out. =)

ok so now this tach is starting to hate me! sometimes I can get it to work. and then when I go and shove it in, it just doesn't work. I'll take it out and it still won't work. play around with some wire and nothing. and then sometimes, all of a sudden, it starts working again! Then of course I put it back in and it doesn't work again. -__-

Any idea how I should go about this? the sensor wire broke off the back, so I soldered it back on. but that didn't do anything. haven't gotten it to work since then either. Should i just buy a new tach? this tach was my dad's back in the 80's. just trying to save some money...

got it to work once i hooked up the positive and ground for the light. but once i removed the positive it would stop working. so hooked everything up so the light would just work all the time to my fuel pump switch. once i do that it still works, but if i cut the power to the pump and the tach, it still works! idk anymore, but it works! so it's like...bittersweet, lol.
