1980 Sedan
Hello Gentlemen
Got my second Corona last weekend. I have a 1978 RT40 which I also posted here, haven't been working on it though.
I bought this non running 1980 manual trans with an extra 20R. As of tonight the 20R in it is ready to come out, and my buddy is coming over tomorrow to help me pull it and install the 20R it came with.
Interior fabric is trashed, need to find some supra seats, I am afraid I am going to have to trash the carpet...
Registered it yesterday, had not been tabbed since 2010. Didn't really get any good history on it from the previous owner.

Re: 1980 Sedan
Thanks man, I always appreciate your posts and take the time to read them. Lot's of info!
20R it came with is no good. Looking for a new alternative. Maybe a 22RE? I would like fuel injection reliability not looking for huge performance.
Bought some Celica-Supra wheels today

Re: 1980 Sedan
If you want to go with a 22RE, shoot for an '85 or newer, as they had more compression, and if you can get the wiring to go with it, it has TCCS (Toyota Computer Controlled Spark), which uses a knock sensor and the computer to control advance - no vacuum or mechanical advance in the dizzy. It has a single row timing chain and plastic guides though, so go to engnbldr.com and get the steel backed guide timing set. He also has a "270" cam that really wakes it up.

Good info thanks!
Whats the best way to go from the throttle linkage system to a cablea(as far as the pedal goes)? I must not be searching for the right terminology online

Re: 1980 Sedan
super excited! just bought a 22RE, gonna go clean it up today, ans put the old 20R oil pan/pick up on for clearing the x-member
test fit tomorrow, and take pics!
I am sure I am missing a lot but heres my to-do list for now
Pressure wash engine bay
make new fuel lines
find/buy inline efi fuel pump and filter
find a battery
find a throttle cable that fits (any ideas?)
3rd gen celica pedal box to accept a throttle cable (thanks a2ndopinion)
ask my friends nicely to help me wire it up
Anyone know of any problems with the dash lighting/sensors?
Dumb question but is there even a check engine light on this chassis?

Re: 1980 Sedan
I pulled the inline pump off of an '83 Supra. '83 Celica (only) w/ EFI had external pumps as well. All Supras, '79-'83 had them. The Supra had it plumbed into the steel line with clamps, so I'm sure it can be done w/o replacing ALL of the line. The fuel pump powers through the AFM, so only turns on when there is air flow. I have wiring diagrams I can PM or EM you tonight if you'd like - I'll be out of town all day - I've been elected to be the leader - https://vintagecorona.forumotion.com/t129-st-patricks-day-cruise-to-tillamook-cheese-factory.
Throttle cable - again, use the entire assembly from a Celica (or Supra?).
I'm sure you can find a blank for a CEL. And you do want one, as the EFI computer can flash codes when there is an issue.
What year engine (and wiring/computer?) did you acquire?

How was the cruise? Pics?
I have a 22RE with harness and ecu from a 90 pickup...looks to be in decent shape
I would definitely put the diagrams to use if you can send them to me, do you prefer email? matthewweaver a t ymail dotc0m
Did a pick n pull run today. Got some good stuff from an '83 celica supra
-gas pedal
-throttle cable (way too short I think?)
-driver seat (only 3 of the bolts line up form what I can tell in the dark)
Forgot to look for the inline fuel pump
Got some parts form a Nissan hardbody truck for my 83 Corolla KA24 drift project
Tomorrow I will ad more pics, I am swapping oil pans tomorrow night to keep the "mid sump" style pan one that came on the 20R in the car. The truck has a "front sump" style pan

Re: 1980 Sedan
Cruise was great. The drive was kinda boring, but it was so cool having 24 Toyotas and Scions (the lone Lexus only made it about 10 miles before the fuel pump failed). I'll post pics this evening in the cruise thread.
I'll also EM the diagrms to you.
A Celica throttle cable is longer - the TB is on the other side of the engine. So take that cable back and get the fuel pump.
I got all four Celica GT-S/Supra seat bolts in. It took some work, but they went. And DAMN they are nice!

Re: 1980 Sedan
Update!
First off on 38th st in Tacoma today I saw a awesome lime green MKII parked at the gas station. Looked for an owner didn't see anyone.
Lots done, but no progress haha!
Found the 4th bolt hole for the celica-supra seat, fit no with no effort at all now....
When swapping oil pans and pick up tube I didn't notice the difference in pick ups, the center bolt hole is very shallow and the 22R pickup acommadated this by having some depth to the pick up so a longer bolt would fit.... I didnt notice and was wrenching and sheared the bolt right off.
Been trying to extract it for a while now with no luck. I only have a really weak cheap drill I think I have to break down and buy a nicer one tomorrow.
Ordered a gasket set from engnblder
immediate to do:
pictures ! I usually work in the dark so that is challenging.
Junkyard run saturday,1) look for a matching passenger seat from a celica-supra, 2) longer throttle cable 3) In-line fuel pump
decide on a used battery just to get it running or just spend the money on a nice one to trunk mount
decide on used tires to get the supra wheels on or just spend the money for nice tires
the above items are hard for me to buy personally when the car isn't driving yet

Re: 1980 Sedan
Have you ever tried left-handed drill bits? I've had excellent luck with them. More often than not, they unscrew the broken bolt before even drilling through it. Harbor Freight has them for cheap.
I'm 50/50 with used batteries. The first one I bought lasted for about a year. I'm running another now that I think will go much longer, but for $35, I'll take my chances.
I also lucked into a killer set of used tires at the J/Y. Almost brand new BFG Touring. Not the greatest, but not bad, and for $96 for a set of four...

Re: 1980 Sedan
22RE is in, haven't connected anything yet. waiting on trans to do rear main seal when it gets here
Removed carb gas pedal and mocked up the EFI Celica-Supra pedal... not really sure where to drill just gonna go for it when a buddy has time to help
I dunno how easy it is to tell in this photo but the Celica-Supra seat is way lower than stock I love it. I can't see the hood when I sit in it
Favorite cleaning product, many bottles of totally awesome cleaner form the dollar tree have given their lives for this build, and dollar tree steel wool....
For some reason on this project I have not organized my bolts or anything...which is backfiring because I have bolts everywhere!
This took me forever to extract, I don't have any mechanical background and just recently starting working on my own cars. I ended up borrowing an easy out set.
I drilled out the highest portion of the broken bolt near the surface so less area was gripping the engine, then I hammered the easy out in and did my best to keep all shavings out of the exposed engine...

Re: 1980 Sedan
I have always found it easier to do engine and trans any time an engine needs to come out. I'd drop a trans to do whatever though.
I use "Purple Power" to clean. The only problem is it can remove paint. It is expensive, but a little goes a LOOOOONG way. I guess it's about the same thing either way - a lot of the cheap stuff, or a little of the expensive stuff. Maybe pre-soak with the expensive stuff and wash away with the cheap stuff? I need to give that a try.
Congrats on the easy-out! I try my damnedest not to use one.

Re: 1980 Sedan
Still parts gathering....
Got a inline fuel pump from an early 80's BMW looks to be in good shape
$30 Battery from 2011
Throttle cable from an early 90's sentra, will find out if its the right size today
I am totally stuck on where/how to drill for the new EFI gas pedal. My buddy is gonna help but it might be a while.
I crushed one of the heater core inlet/outlet brass lines I hope I can just put something in the line to bend it back out without damaging it further
I will get some pics because this is pointless without them!

Re: 1980 Sedan
Shopping list
-Customer air filter (I have a bunch of pipes to try to rig an intake with the MAF)
-Battery tie down of some kind
-Fluids
-EFI fuel lines (buddy has a mini bender I can borrow)
-Some custom something or other to affix a slim e-fan I have to the Corona radiator

Re: 1980 Sedan
Here's a few pics. I know it doesn't look like much has changed. Saturday night is the big night. Buddies are coming to help me work on it. plans are
replace throw out bearing and reinstall trans
customize a mount for the Celica EFI pedal and throttle cable (Grabbed an early 90's sentra throttle cable dunno if its gonna work )
mount battery in the trunk
mount an electric fan I got from an early 90's Corolla, it was mounted in front of the radiator gonna try to keep it that way
mount electric inline fuel pump from a 80's BMW (don't even remember the model) on the frame rail. figure out fuel lines.
parts party
Does any other model Corona 79-81 come with a factory tach?
good thing it's warming up outside. I hope Celica HVAC stuff fits
Junkyard results from last Sunday
I'd prefer to move the battery to the back than snake the intake across to the driver side
Can't tell but I need an aftermarket air filter
Let me know what you guys think!

Re: 1980 Sedan
Looks like you're well on your way!
I have an aftermarket air filter when I get that far, also have the Supra AFM, and am hopefully acquiring a Supra TB shortly as well. I want to relocate my battery too, but with a wagon, I'm kinda outta luck.
BTW, the fans are more efficient as a puller, not a pusher.

Re: 1980 Sedan
Been ridiculously busy, car isn't done yet.
Need/looking for:
22RE knock sensor and ignitor (1991)
Good dry cell Battery
New key and ignition mine seems kind of wonky
Finish wiring and mounting electric fuel pump in trunk
Free time
In the mail-
All new brakes and clutch slave and master
Camber plates
In the future-
Heater core is broken, replace broken HVAC parts
Find passenger celica-supra seat
Try to stop trunk leaks
Poly bushings
If it works by Sunday I'd like to go to the Old School Reunion but that is unlikely

Re: 1980 Sedan
Are you sticking with factory brakes? The trick setup is to swap to 3rd gen Celica struts and modify your steering arms to work with them. Then you have vented rotors, and from there can upgrade to '87-'88 Cressida rotors, calipers and brackets for even bigger rotors.

This is what I will go for eventually. I didn't want to try anything custom right off the bat. Does it fit under 14's?
Swap didn't come with coil+ignitor so we are trying to make a 92-93 V6 Camry one work...
My friend made an awesome custom gas pedal. It still uses the floor mounted push pedal but he welded the top half from another pedal so it works with a cable now.
Will get pics when it's running...
