My first ever Corona?? should I?? Empty My first ever Corona?? should I??

Post by justchilin Sun Nov 11, 2012 5:29 am

Hey everyone,
just came across this foum and I had to join. Thank you all ahead of time for your time. Well, I have the opportunity to purchase a 1972 Toyota Corona Deluxe Automatic. It looks in decent shape, owner says it was his daily driver, drives well. Has had engine rebuild, interior is ok, exterior looks good. Ill include some pics. I was wondering what you all thought on this one, should I go for it as my first corona? I would like a car I can drive around town, nothing flashy or fast, just a nice cruising car to take to the store and such. It looks like a good start, owner is asking $1400, Im working on getting him down below 1k, Im not too familiar on what they usually sell for but im willing to go 800-1000 on a first vintage. Just would like some feedback and suggestions as to what specifically I should be looking out for when I go see it in person. Where are the usual rust areas for this car? Anything I should ask the owner? Thanks all for helping a newbie.

Welcome to Vintage Corona
nice find !! The car seems to be in good condition looks like a deluxe .. my corona was about $1000 and has some bad rust spots like rear quarter panel front winshield wheel wells and rear end... i would check the how it runs drives and what you plan on using the corona for ? not sure if you know but parts for coronas are hard to come by so plan on spending some $$ unless you fab items yourself or buy a spare care

Thanks for the welcome, this is a nice forum and wish it the best. i appreciate the reply and tips. Im still in talks with the seller, I really dont want to go over 1k but so far they wont budge under 1.2k, Im taking into consideration the costs of just getting it reliable (tune up, tires, dmv fees etc). Id love to keep the original look, something like this:

From the pictures the seller has, it doesnt look too bad, its to be determined what it looks like up close. I hope they come down on price so I can check it out in person. Anyways, Ill keep you all posted if I end up with it. thanks again for the info and the great site!

My first ever Corona?? should I?? Empty Look what I have!!....

Post by justchilin Sat Nov 17, 2012 10:35 pm

So.....it was tough, it was raining, we were all soaked, the negotiations lasted hours.... we almost lost a hub cap on a test drive.... in the end....

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Interior is good, needs some cleaning..

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

Had her towed, she runs but didnt want to risk getting caught in the rain on the 405/5 frwys!! thank you AAA...

There she goes....

I have a couple of issues, not that big but I will be asking for all your help if you dont mind Smile. The carb was rebuilt but it was placed on by owner not rebuilder, when at idle on drive, it seems like it wants to shut off, but when I accelerate it drives good, does the carb just need adjusting you think? The steering wheel feels a little loose, is this normal with non- power steering? Any tips on replacing the ignition switch? they rigged a secondary ignition switch on the right because the original one "broke" one day. Eh, it works... Anyways, Ill post better pics on a more sunny day once I clean her up. Cant wait to get her 100%. I saw slight surface rust in some areas but look VERY clean otherwise, the AAA guy was impressed. Thanks!!! Oh BTW, is it too braggy to tell how much I ended up paying?? Very Happy

"Maybe...check the accelerator pump and vacuum hoses. Also check the ignition and timing."

Will do, once up to speed, feels fine, its just at red light and when starting to accelerate. Otherwise, cruises at at least 50 pretty nicely without backfiring or anything. Thanks for the tips. (this is my first Corona... and only second carburated car, so please excuse my novice-ness geek )

Its more when driving, it just seems like the steering wheel moves around, but I think its just the fact that it has no power steering. I cant remember if the 76 Celica I had a few year back did the same thing. When its parked, its pretty solid so it must Im just not used to it. Anywho, I only had a couple of hours to check it out today with the rain and all, tomorrow Ill look into it further and use your tips as guides. Thanks and hope I can continue asking you all for help.

$900 Is a great price!

Yea I would check the accelerator pump on the carb. Hell, I would just spray the shit out of it with carb cleaner.

But first things first, change the oil, spark plugs/wires. And older hoses. make sure battery terminals/grounds are clean.

Give us a little more info on the car. Milage, engine, chassis code, etc..

You can adjust some play out of the steering box IFF that is where it is, but also check tie rod ends, idler and Pitman arms, and wheel bearings.

I will comeback with updates as soon as I get back next week and have time to look into these things. thanks again to all of you and Im glad I found this forum.

Oh and milage reads 66,xxx, engine is an 18R-C, chasis code is RT85-006866, automatic transmission, engine looks to be all stock but I havent had a chance to get deep into it. Let me know what else Im missing here...

Thanks! Damn work is keeping me from playing with my new toy, but oh well, something to look forward too for next week. Im finding cool things when cleaning out the car, original owners manual, toyota cloth tool carrying case for tire iron etc, original orange metal tire block (to keep car from rolling back when jacked) and just realized it has the original CA plates from early 70's... hope I can keep these when I re-register it in my name...p.s, anyone have an extra rubber bumper guard, mine seems to be missing the one on the right. Oh, and I do have the original hubcaps too, just have to clean them up and thrown them on.

So where in Ventura County are you? I know the area quite well, as I was a Construction Mechanic (Seabee) for 15 years, and stayed there for two more years after getting out.
